Penn College Approves Associate of Applied Science Degree in Concrete Science Technology

Article provided by Ken Crank, PACA's Director of Concrete Promotion

Penn College has approved an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Concrete Science Technology beginning the Fall semester of 2018. Penn College instructor, Mr. Frank Reber, was the driving force behind the development of the program; which began as an idea over four years ago.

In those four years, Mr. Reber organized an advisory committee consisting of Susan Armstrong (Central Builders Supply Co.), Shawn McCoy (Centre Concrete Co.), Doug Cassatt (Lehigh Hanson), Ed Groninger (Admixtures Inc.), Phil Kresge (NRMCA), and Ken Crank (PACA). The group worked with Penn College to develop a curriculum, that would not only provide students with hands on learning but also exposed them to business related classes for those seeking opportunities outside of the physical expertise needed for the trade.

As the school begins pooling resources for the program, Mr. Reber has contacted our committee with the following note:

Hello everyone, as you know we are starting our new concrete program in fall of 2018. We are still in need of equipment. If anyone is aware of any auctions or manufacturers looking to get rid of testing equipment or other concrete related supplies it would be appreciated if you could let me know. Also I would like to get together to get everyone's input on several items.

  1. Equipment
  2. Staffing Classes
  3. Industry co-op on some of the classes

If you are interested and able to assist with any of these needs, please contact Ken Crank.
