4.29.10 - Beware, It’s Pothole Season
Spring is here and with it…….potholes. The potholes don’t just bring pain to our car springs, they also produce challenges to road repair crews across the Commonwealth.
In those cases where the road repairs are being made with concrete it is quite probable that the mix being used will have accelerated design characteristics. If the PennDOT AA Accelerated Patching Specification is being used, it is critical that readers of this newsletter understand the implications of some recent changes made to the patching specification.
Foremost among those changes is the raising of the upper limit of cement content listed in Table A of the specification from 752 lbs. to 800 lbs. The Concrete Technical Committee has worked diligently to have this, and other changes made to the accelerated patching specification.
There have been some recent questions regarding the interpretations of this limit. To clarify those questions should they arise, we are providing a letter written from PennDOT to Industry that agrees with Industry’s position on the change. To download that letter please click here.

UPCOMING HIGHWAY AND BRIDGE PROJECTS
PennDOT Secretary Allen Biehler recently released the final list of highway and bridge construction projects to be funded with the $1.026 billion from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), referred to as the "economic stimulus package". These funds will be added to the estimated $1.8 billion in projects already scheduled for letting by PennDOT on the 2009 calendar year.
The department intends to let these economic stimulus projects over an aggressive 180-day period in order to assure that the initiative puts as many people to work as quickly as possible. To view a complete list of the stimulus highway projects, click here.
