A graduation requirement for each PELA class is the completion of a Capstone project, presented at the Annual Meeting each November in Hershey.

The inaugural Class of 2021, or PELA 1 as we've come to refer to them, recognized the need for workforce development in the aggregates, concrete and cement industries and the related business partners that support those industries. Their Capstone project was a video explaining the various jobs available in the industries, how current employees feel about working in the industry, etc. And, the group lobbied PACA's Board of Directors to form a Workforce Development Community to continue the work of PELA 1.

PELA 2, or the Class of 2022, continued this theme by recognizing the need to better market the industry and its products, as well as jobs that are available. Check out their DREAM SEQUENCE video created, written and produced by the members of PELA 2.

PELA 2 also recognized that a target social platform for the younger generation is TikTok. In response, PACA now has a TikTok page - https://www.tiktok.com/@paca_7.... paca_717 is the name of the page. The group created three TikTok videos which are now posted to this page.

Members of PELA 2 designed an industry recruitment poster that is now available - FREE OF CHARGE - to PACA members to use at career fairs, school presentations, open houses, etc. The prospects are limitless! The poster can be customized with your company's QR code, etc. Learn more by using the link below.

Last, but not least, the group asked for a place to house the hard work that both PELA 1 and PELA 2 put into their Capstone projects presentations.

Videos developed by both classes are posted on this page, as well as, a graphic of the poster.

When talking with employment prospects or your future workforce, point them to this page to learn more about the endless opportunities in the construction materials industry.

Applications are now being accepted for the PACA Emerging Leaders Academy Class of 2023!

A few FAQs

1. Wait - isn't PELA and YLDG the same thing???

The answer is a resounding NO! Emerging Leaders are different than Young Leaders. Young Leaders are that - YOUNG - under the age of 40. Emerging Leaders have no age limit, no age restrictions. You can have anyone in your company step into a leadership role at any point in their career regardless of their age. Remember, Emerging Leaders are not necessarily Young Leaders and Young Leaders are not necessarily Emerging Leaders.

2. How much time do I need to commit to PELA?

The answer is - 10 months. 8 months of in-person classroom time, including the Annual Meeting in November (attendance is required at the Annual Meeting and graduation ceremony) and 2 months of online sessions. These in-person events are 1.5 days with one overnight in most cases - sometimes 2 overnights if you need to come in the evening before start time.

3. Is there any new components to the application process for 2023?

The answer to this is a resounding YES! Instructions are included with the application and nomination form - please be sure to review the instruction sheet before completing the application and nomination forms.

4. When are submissions due?

The three requirements to apply are all due to Kallie Kline by no later than close of business on Friday, January 6th.

5. What is the cost to be a student in PELA?

Tuition is $1100 per student, plus hotel stays, travel, etc. Meals are provided by the association thanks to the generous donations made by PACA member companies.

Have additional questions? Contact Kallie Kline.

As a reminder, each class is capped at 20 students per year. Members of the PELA Board of Trustees will review the applications, the nominations and the elevator pitch style/marketing branding submissions and choose the final roster for the Class of 2023 in mid-January. Notifications will come out shortly thereafter and the first session will be held in State College on February 17, 2023.
