Day One - Review / Written Exam.
Day Two - Performance Exam.
The one-hour (strictly enforced) written examination is "closed book" and consists of 55 multiple-choice questions. There are five to ten questions on each of the ASTM test methods & practices.
The performance examination is also "closed book" and requires an actual demonstration of six of the required test methods & practices plus a verbal description of Practice C172 (sampling).
The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform all of the required steps for each procedure. Recertification is necessary every 5 years, and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.
What is the difference between recertifying and becoming certified for the first time? From ACI's standpoint, there is no difference. Whether you are obtaining your certification for the first time or you are renewing your expired certification, you are still required to take both the full written and performance exams.
Is the ACI Certification and the PennDOT (NECEPT) certification the same thing? NO.
When working on a PennDOT job, you are required to maintain the PennDOT (NECEPT) certification. You must have a current ACI technician certification PRIOR to registering for the NECEPT exam. Once the NECEPT certification is obtained, the ACI certification is no longer required to maintain NECEPT certification. However, if your NECEPT certification lapses for any reason, you are once again required to take the ACI certification exam followed by again taking the NECEPT exam.
ASTM Standards / Non-PennDOT Jobs?
PennDOT is the only entity which recognizes NECEPT certification. ACI certification is still required by ASTM standards for technicians working non-PennDOT jobs.
